Libro gratuito de iBooks Author (en inglés)

La editorial O’Reilly ha publicado el primero libro (gratuito) sobre la creación de libros con iBooks Author. De momento solo está disponible en inglés, pero su contenido es muy interesante para todos los que hayan pensado publicar con esta herramienta.

Recomendamos su lectura, sobre todo por el análisis al principio de las posibilidades a la hora de publicar contenido con iBooks Author, ya que tiene algunas limitaciones que van a hacer que su contenido solamente pueda ser disfrutado completamente en un iPad:

• Los libros en formato .ibooks solo pueden venderse en la tienda de Apple iBookstore; en ningún otro lugar.
• Los libros solo se van a poder visualizar en un dispositivo: un iPad.
• No se pueden crear PDF’s listos para imprimir: Se pueden exportar PDFs pero no están listos para impresión profesional.
• Hay que firmar un contrato con Apple, ya sea para distribuir el libro de forma gratuita o vendiéndolo en el iBookstore.
• La publicación de un libro con iBooks Author no es gratuita del todo, ya que para vender el libro nos hace falta un ISBN para el mismo (que no es gratuito).
• El precio máximo de un libro es de 14,99 USD (aproximadamente 11,50 EUR).

You will only be able to sell your book in the iBookstore.
If you use iBooks Author to create your book, you cannot export the file and sell it in any channel other than the iBookstore. You can’t sell it on your website. You can’t sell it on Amazon. You can’t sell it anywhere else. This restriction is included in the iBooks Author EULA (End User License Agreement) and specifically applies to the ebook format (.ibooks) and not the content of the book.

Your book will work on only one device: an iPad.
Apple’s iBooks Author outputs files that are nonstandard and are specifically tailored for an iPad. You won’t be able to open them on any other reading device,including a Kindle or a NOOK. You won’t even be able to open your book on your desktop computer.

You will not be able to create print-ready PDFs.
If you have experience with traditional publishing tools such as FrameMaker or InDesign, you’re used to being able to output a CMYK PDF with printers’ marks. These options are not available. You can output a PDF, but it won’t be suitable for professional printing.

You will likely be entering into an agreement with Apple.
If you plan to publish to the iBookstore, you must apply for a seller account, of which there are two types: a Paid Books Account and a Free Books Account. It is in your best interest to consider up front which you will be using. You can read about each type of account in “Choosing Between a Paid and Free Account.”

Publishing with iBooks Author is not necessarily free.
While it is true that the application is free, there are costs associated with publishing a paid book in the iBookstore, including but not limited to the following:
• A single ISBN in the US costs $125 (see Chapter 6 for more information).
• Apple takes 30 percent of every sale that you make.

The most you can charge for your book is $14.99.
Apple has placed a price limit on books created in iBooks Author.

Por otro lado hemos descubierto una herramienta para la publicación colaborativa de eBooks de Sourcefabric: Booktype. Permite que varios autores trabajen sobre un mismo libro, el cual se puede exportar a los formatos epub y mobi, además de PDF y HTML. También permite exportar los mismos a Amazon, iBooks, Lulu.com y otras webs relacionadas con libros electrónicos. Vamos a ver si lo probamos en los próximos días.
